25/06/2006, 9:35 AM Fletch Joined on 19/06/2006 Fakenham Posts 5 A CRACKDOWN ON SECOND HOMES I think that a crackdown on second homes is a good idea.  My basic objections to second homes in the North Norfolk area is as follows: 1.   A second home for someone from outside Norfolk, stops that property being available to people who were born and bred in the area being able to stay in the area. 2.   Look around today and you can see some villages have only approx 50% full time occupied properties that means villages are virtual ghost towns during the week. 3.   Loss of the Norfolk dialect, as locals move away the Norfolk dialect is dying out. 4.   Property prices pushed up, so young local people cannot afford to buy houses in this area. 5.  Second home owner driving round in their Chelsea tractors (4x4's), these peoples driving is appaling, they drive down the middle of country lanes and are then scared to drive up the verges when passing you.  (People it's a 4x4 it's supposed to drive across country, a little bit os dirt on it wont hurt). My message to these people is simple.  Please don't buy up the small cottages and houses they are needed for youngsters starting out in life.  If you really must have second homes up here, spend more time in them and integrate with the local community.  When I say integrate, that does not mean moaning and trying to change the way locals do things, it means understanding, co-operating and probably changing the way you think about things.  This is not hard to do, just chill out a bit.  I found the first 10 years or so difficult to understand the local way of doing things, then I married a local girl and had to see the local way of doing things is best. I also cannot understand why the council do not make second home owners pay the full community charge, these people can afford two houses!  Why should they get away with paying only half the community charge.  Fletch    Report
