Death of a fine market town pub
Visited the Crown Hotel recently? The food is still good, but it has been remodelled with some kind of "urban-chic" interior that is absolutely horrible and completely destroys the atmosphere of this previously cosy market-town pub. Sofas and chairs are covered with some kind of beige faux suede that must already be showing up stains; cheap-looking modern art pictures adorn the walls. The tallest barstools in the world are in the "lounge" and make anyone sitting on them look distinctly uncomfortable. The lovely old architectural features have been all but obliterated. Don't even ask about the carpet. What's really sad is to see the clearly disoriented and disappointed expressions of previous regular customers, who dropped in on market day last week - to say nothing of the 20 minute wait one elderly gentleman next to us had for a beef sandwich. It's all very sad indeed.
