The man, who was in his 50s and not from the area, was stopped by officers as he drove towards them in the right-hand lane.

It happened shortly after 7.40pm on Monday night, near to the A47’s junction with Lingwood Lane in North Burlingham.

PC Steve Lee, who stopped the driver, said the man did not know the roads as he was not local.

He said: “I was just glad it was us [who saw him]. We put our lights on to warn other drivers.

“It was unbelievable and it could have been much worse.”

The driver, who was a Romanian national, passed a roadside breath test.

But Mr Lee said he was reported for driving without due care and attention.

He will either be summoned to court or will receive a conditional offer of points on his licence and a fine.

The incident was captured by the onboard camera of Mr Lee’s police car.

A still from the video footage shows the officer was travelling at 52mph as the car came towards him.
