A well-known concert band established over 50 years ago is set to hold their annual concert in Wells to raise money for the RNLI.
The Lewisham Concert Band will be performing at St Nicholas Parish Church in Wells during a concert organised by the RNLI Lifeboat Guild.
Founded in 1967 and conducted for many years by the late Joseph Proctor, the Lewisham Concert Band found fame for its numerous BBC Radio 2 broadcasts during the 1970s and 1980s on Friday Night is Music Night and Listen to the Band. Today, under the musical direction of John Hargreaves, it is still one of London’s top wind bands and comprises both professional and high-standard amateur musicians.
The concert will feature a number of pieces by famous composers, including Handel, Strauss, Malcolm Arnold and Eric Coates, along with familiar themes such as Sleepy Lagoon, the theme from Desert Island Discs, The Blue Danube and a selection from South Pacific.
On the following day The Barley Brigg Morris Dancers will be making their way through Wells starting at the Beach Café before heading to Quayside, The Globe Hotel and eventually back round to the Beach Café. The Suffolk-based dancers will perform the North-West tradition of morris, which involves colourful costumes and clogs with bells.
They will stand out thanks to their recognisable outfits, made from a bright mix of red, white and blue, along with flower patterned hats.
Money raised from these events will contribute to the day-to-day running costs of the Wells Lifeboats.
John Mitchell, spokesperson for Wells Lifeboat, said: “It costs over £300,000 a year to run the two lifeboats from Wells and any fund raising events by the Lifeboat guild is important to the effort.
“All the money raised from these events will go toward the Wells RNLI lifeboat and maintaining the station.”
The concert will take place at St Nicholas Parish Church in Wells on Saturday, September 2 at 7:30pm. Tickets are priced £10 and are available in advance from Wells Tourist Information Centre on Freeman’s Street in Wells or can be reserved by phoning 01328 710899.
The Barley Brigg Morris Dancers will be in Wells on Sunday, September 3 from 11:15am until 5:15pm.
