‘I’ve always wanted to be an octopus and this was the perfect excuse’ - bride-to-be’s fishy Norfolk beach party

Extremely fishy goings on turned visitors’ heads at a north Norfolk beach.

While crabs and the odd washed-up harbour porpoise are not out of place on Brancaster’s golden sands - mermaids, a seahorse and a giant cod with fat red lips all cavorting in the bracing briny are definitely a less common sight.

The strange collection of creatures was among some 50 marine marvels found paddling and screaming in the surf this afternoon.

They were all friends of soon-to-be-married Sara Underwood and Andy York who chose to combine their stag and hen dos with a sea-themed fancy-dress outing to Norfolk.

Ms Underwood, 50, made her own octopus costume and a giant squid outfit for her fiancé Mr York, 44.

“I’ve always wanted to be an octopus and this was the perfect excuse to do it,” she explained.

Her mum Sue Underwood also created her own parrot fish fancy dress while dad Tony hired his seahorse costume.

The Underwoods senior own a home in Brancaster and their daughter has known the area for many years.

The party, in full fancy dress, arrived at the Norfolk coast aboard a coach from their homes in Northamptonshire.

After their seaside paddle they rounded off the day appropriately with lunch at Eric’s Fish and Chip Shop in nearby Thornham.

“It’s been fantastic. We’ve loved it,” said Ms Underwood. “We’ve had mermaids sitting on the rocks and jellyfish waving in the breeze. It couldn’t have gone better.”

Ms Underwood and Mr York, who run an engineering business, live in Brigstock, between Kettering and Peterborough.

They plan to marry on December 21 in a hotel near Nottingham.
