Pupils from Dereham’s schools marked the International Day of Peace on Friday September 21 with a town centre ceremony.

Pairs of children from local infant schools gathered to lay flowers in a specially made peace display pot which was produced by students at Northgate High School.

Canon Sally Theakston and the mayor of Dereham Hilary Bushell led the occasion, explaining to the children the importance of peace and telling them about the important part they would play as they eventually carry peace into the 22nd century.

The pot is now placed in front of the war memorial at the end of the Market Place as a reminder of the sacrifice made by those who fought for peace.

Elsewhere in Dereham, a musical evening took place at Dereham Memorial Hall between 6.30pm and 7pm on Saturday September 22 and a service for peace with hymns and readings took place at St Nicholas Parish Church at 2.30pm on Sunday September 23.
