While most of Europe is simmering in hot conditions, it seems as if summer is all but over in Norfolk and Waveney.

After temperatures hit 30C in June and at the start of July, the thermometer has taken a hit since the start of the school summer holidays - with temperatures plummeting into the teens and hours of rainfall.

But more settled conditions are on the horizon, with a period of dry weather on the way at the end of next week.

James Wilby, of Norwich-based Weatherquest, said the current climate was due to an area of low pressure.

“At the start of the July we had high pressure close to the British Isle near Denmark and Germany which brought warm air and caused temperatures to rise well above average for the time of year,” he said. “Currently we have a low pressure jet stream close to us which is bringing low pressure from the west and off the Atlantic. That is why temperatures have dropped to around 20C, which is still average for this time of year, and why it has been slightly wetter than usual.”

There could be thunderstorms in some part of the region on Saturday, but Sunday should be drier before rain returns Monday night.

By Friday, warmer and drier conditions should return for a spell, which will not only please the children off school but also the region’s farmers.

“We have had a lot of people ringing us up, especially farmers, asking when the drier conditions will be back as they have been trying to harvest crops and currently can’t get anything done,” Mr Wilby said.
