Lifeboat charity reminds visitors to be wary of tide times after rescuing couple cut off at Brancaster

A couple has apologised to a lifeboat crew after they were rescued when they found themselves cut off by the tide at Brancaster.

Hunstanton Hovercraft was called to help two people cut off by the tide on Scolt Head Island just after 5.45pm on Thursday evening.

The couple had walked over to the island but were unable to make it back, and were ferried back to the beach by the lifeboat and left in the care of the Wells coastguard response team.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) - who said the couple later apologised to the crew - said visitors should always be aware of the tide times.

However tempting it is to cross over to the island, they said, it was important to remember the strength of the tidal currents, which can easily leave people cut off.

After returning to the station, the hovercraft was called back out in the search for an elderly missing man.

Coastguard units, the coastguard helicopter and police were involved, but the man was found walking on the prom towards Heacham.
