Fourteen life-size model soldiers have been placed around Hindolveston, near Fakenham, as a poignant tribute to the men from the village who sacrificed their lives in the First World War.

Each has been placed outside the home where they lived.

A voice recording, made by villager Will Crookes, 15, can be heard from the models, telling each soldier’s story.

This is part of a series of events being held to mark the village’s contribution to the Great War, organised by villagers and members of Hindolveston Parish Council.

Tim Walsh, one of the organisers, said: “This has been a real community effort and lots of people have worked very hard, including some children.

“These were very special young men who gave everything, so it’s very important that we make the extra effort to honour their memories.”

The model soldiers, designed by Dave Morrison, were put up on Saturday and will remain in place until this Saturday.

On Sunday, a First World War exhibition will be held in Hindolveston Village Hall, featuring information about soldiers from the village who died, wartime memorabilia, video footage, tea and cakes made from wartime recipes and a concert of songs and poetry.

There are also plans to create a memorial garden at the village church, due to be ready for Remembrance Day, on November 11.

The project was originally thought up by Janet Ellis and has been funded by a £6,400 English Heritage Lottery Fund grant. Research has been carried out by husband and wife Trevor and Sue Cross, who found that 79 people from Hindolveston fought during the Great War and 15 died.

Not enough information could be found on the 15th soldier for him to be featured as a model.
