A national campaign launched to raise funds for a new police memorial is being supported by Norfolk Constabulary.

Chief Constable Simon Bailey pledged his support to the campaign which has been launched just two months after the Westminster terror attack during which PC Keith Palmer was murdered while on duty.

The campaign will help raise funds to build a new UK Police Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire.

The memorial will be inscribed with the names of more than 1,400 officers and staff from the police service who have died from injuries they sustained while carrying out their lawful duties.

Mr Bailey said of the campaign: “When a police officer falls in the line of duty, their death is a reminder of the very real dangers they face, day in, day out, while putting themselves in harm’s way to protect the communities they serve.

“This fund is about giving deserved recognition to the honourable men and women who have given their lives to protect us.”

The public fundraising campaign has been launched in partnership with LBC and Express Newspapers and the overall project will cost £4million – so far £2.5million has been raised.

Norfolk’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Lorne Green, added: “We should never forget the brave people who have lost their lives in the course of their duty. Greater love hath no man than this. Such a memorial is a powerful way to remember those men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice.”

Anyone making a donation of more than £20 will receive a black and white chequered wristband inscribed with the words ‘courage and sacrifice’.

• Further information about the memorial, how to make a donation or take part in fundraising activity can be found at the UK Police Memorial website.
