The sights, tastes, and smells, of the traditional British seaside are being captured on camera by the BBC’s Countryfile programme as it films a summer special in north Norfolk.

All the show’s main presenters have been out in the area looking at various aspects of coastal life - from the iconic crab industry to recreating a lesser known perfume from the area.

Julia Bradbury has been rolling up her sleeves to help volunteers revive a tired seafront shelter at Cromer, and will be tracking down the recipe of a Poppyland Bouquet perfume which was popular until the 1930s and trying to re-concoct it, before asking locals to do a sniff test.

She said the area was well-known for its crabs and beaches but the aim was to show others aspects, such as the perfume. The flowery recipe from former Jetty Street chemist Daniel Davison had been found and she would aim to recreate it.

Ellie Harrison had an early morning start on John Davies’ crab fishing boat, before boiling the catch back on shore, and learning how to turn them into a meal with local celebrity chef Galton Blackiston from Morston Hall. She is also due to go snorkelling on the chalk reef just offshore, weather conditions permitting.

Matt Baker is visiting the water driven sawmill at Gunton Park and sourcing materials for repairs to the shelter.

Farmer Adam Henson will see the cattle on the Holkham estate as well as visiting chilli grower and sauce maker Glyn Kirpalani, while John Craven explores the National trust’s Blakeney Point which is celebrating its centenary.

Programme researcher Susie Rack said the programme began looking at the Point and developed into a special show involving all the presenters.

The filming is due to finish late on Friday afternoon, with a singalong with the Sheringham Shantymen at the Cromer Marrams shelter off the Runton Road - when it is hoped the restoration project including murals by local artist Mik Richardson will be complete.

With rain forecast they just aimed to “carry on” as they had through most a wet British summer, she added. “We always have our wellies with us.”

More volunteers are welcome to turn up to lend a hand at the shelter any time from 10.30am on Friday.

The programme is due to be broadcast on Sunday August 12.
