Only 83 had ever been awarded.

The official starting price for the item - lot 17 - was £3,600 and by the time auctioneer David James had introduced the item, it had already reached £5,000 due to competition between more than 150 online bidders.

The hammer eventually went down at £8,200.

A spokesperson for the auctioneers, based at Norwich Street in the market town, said: “Lot 17 sent the internet wild. The key feature of the medal group was an exceedingly rare Order of St Anne gold medal. The price reached a staggering £8,200.

“While nothing else at the auction came close to matching the sale of lot 17, [others] late in the day all went for much more than expected.”

Also at the auction, a collection of Masonic medals with an estimate of £30 to £50 sold for £200.
