Rumours have returned that Hollywood actor Johnny Depp has bought a stately home on the outskirts of Burnham Market.

It was believed at the weekend that the 48-year-old megastar had bought Burnham Westgate Hall, a 13-bedroom house which came on to the property market in June last year for £7m.

The mansion is not currently on the market, according to the website Rightmove, which read today: “Savills, Country Department have removed this property. It may now be sold, under offer or temporarily withdrawn from the market.”

Burnham Westgate Hall is described on the Rightmove website as a Grade II* Georgian country house in a parkland setting.

It was described by Country Life as “the most significant country house sale to take place in Norfolk in 20 years” when it came onto the market.

Louis de Soissons, director of Savills and head of residential in Norfolk and North Suffolk, said today: “We have had notable people look at this house (Burnham Westgate Hall) but I cannot confirm or deny who any of them are.

“It is extraordinary how persistent this rumour is about Johnny Depp buying a house in the area. It resurfaces about once a year.

“I can confirm that Burnham Westgate Hall has not sold as we speak. Contracts have not exchanged. Nothing has changed.”

A Burnham Market resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said yesterday: “There has been a rumour about this for four or five months that Mr Depp has looked at Burnham Westgate Hall.”

They said that the reclusive actor had been spotted in Burnham Market over the past few months by villagers but did not know if he had bought a home in the area.

In September, the EDP reported that rumours were rife on Twitter that the Pirates of the Caribbean star was buying Burnham Westgate Hall, which is set in 38 acres of leafy grounds.

But at the time, Mr Soissons said: “There’s no substance to it at all, I’m afraid. It’s completely unfounded.”

He added the property had been viewed by a number of interested parties. But Mr Depp was not amongst them.

Mr Depp does not reportedly frequent social networking sites. When asked why in a rare interview, he said: “What is ‘Tweeting’? I’m glad not to be part of it. I just want to go and read a book.”

  • I have changed my mind. Johnny Depp for police commissioner I say. I used to support Lord Dannatt, but now feel it should be an American in the job.

  • I, and my husband, met this man and his lovely wife briefly in Burnham Market some months ago. They approached us for directions initially we did not recognise them until he spoke, coupled with her strong french accent I realised who they were. That realisation made no difference we gave them the information they needed and went on our way really chuffed that they had spoken to us. Both seemed really nice ORDINARY people, well spoken, polite they were not at all out of place in casual clothes carrying shopping as any other person in the street. I hope that the media will leave them alone, we all know many celebs live in this area and I would imagine the reason for that is Norfolk people do not take too much notice of celeb status and leave people to carry on with their lives without harrasing them. This man, and his family, like privacy I am sure that if he is inundated with people trying to pry he will simply up sticks and go back to France or the US, he can certainly to afford to go wherever he fancies.

  • I bought the nearest house to his target in order to depress the price for him. Then, when he completed his purchase the value of mine went sky-high and I sold it at a massive profit. Now JD is moving out `cos he misses me so much and the prices of both properties have plummeted as a result.. So I`m buying both of them back.... "take everything and give nothing back". The Black Pearl will make a super floating Gastro-Venue too. All good. Regards, Barbossa.

  • It's in the national papers today that another of the Burnham Market crowd (Amanda Holden) has bought a property in Chipping Norton so maybe they'll all start moving out now. Can somebody please explain the attraction of Burnham Market? I know it well but detest all the posers and mini celebs. There are no gorgeous views, no sea nearby .... nothing that the almost identical village of East Rudham, a few miles away hasn't got. Yet people flock to Burnham Market. It's just a green with some attractive houses around it and there are many such villages in Norfolk.

  • Hold on Amanda, don't give up on North Norfolk yet. There's no risk of better roads or broadband for several generations yet. Burnham Upmarket no doubt deserves a replacement sleb of Mr Depps' quality.

  • I personally find this story amazingly exciting and I am on the edge of my seat to discover if Johnny has actually purchased a home in Norfolk. Just to give you some background, I love reading celebrity magazines and learning all about famous actors and pop stars. Without my daily celebrity fix I tend to find the world grey and miserable and somehow disappointing. Learning that Johnny Depp has moved to Norfolk will really make my day.
