More heavy snow expected across Norfolk and Suffolk

More snow is expected to fall today and tonight across Norfolk and Suffolk after the region woke up to freezing temperatures this morning.

Children have already been taking advantage of the wintery conditions, brought in by the so-called Beast from the East, on Mousehold Heath in Norwich.

But dozens of schools, many of which are in south Norfolk, have shut and 985 trains were cancelled today because of the adverse weather.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow for East Anglia until midnight tonight.

It has also put out a more serious amber weather warning for snow for areas of the Suffolk coast until midnight tonight.

Richard Jones, forecaster for Norwich-based Weatherquest, said the coldest spot in the region last night was in Santon Downham in Suffolk where temperatures plummeted to -8C.

At 6am today the temperature at Tibenham Airfield in south Norfolk was -7.7C.

There was a reported 11cm of snow on the airfield - the most in one place in the UK.

Mr Jones said: “That was one of the coldest nights for a long while.

“Some places have seen quite significant snowfall, particularly in parts of east Norfolk, including Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft.”

Parts of north Norfolk, including Wells, have also experienced heavy snowfall.

Mr Jones added that temperatures are expected to reach freezing point today but temperatures would feel more like -5C because of north-easterly winds.

He said Norfolk and Suffolk should expect more snow showers, up to 4cms in places, throughout the rest of today and tonight and temperatures would again dip to -5C overnight.

Conditions tomorrow morning are expected to be similar to this morning but should “ease up” by tomorrow afternoon.

Mr Jones warned some roads and pavements could be icy.
