Sun shines on Sheringham for 24th annual Potty Morris and Folk Festival

More than three hundred handkerchief-waving, stick-clashing morris dancers paraded through the streets of Sheringham today

, for the annual two-day Potty Morris and Folk Festival.

Forty dance sides from all over the country entertained crowds at ten town locations, also performing at the main arena on Lifeboat Plain.

Flamboyant, colourful costumes ranged from the purple-painted, feather-hatted garb of Wicket Brood from Hertfordshire and the Steam Punk-style get-up of Slack Ma Girdle Morris, from Newmarket, to the to the nature-inspired, ivy-clad costumes of the Maenads Morris – also known as the Wild Women of Kent.

Tony Chadwick, who is a festival founder member, said the event had got off to a “terrific” start, with crowds turning out in force.

“The nice thing is that it brings people into the town and it makes a really colourful spectacle,” he added.

The festival continues tomorrow with dancing at the main arena from 10.30am-1.30pm.
