People across the region have been left baffled by a mysterious, sweet smell in the air with some saying they have been aware of it for days.

The smell has caused widespread speculation about what is causing it and people have noticed in places ranging from Dereham, Mattishall and Toftwood to Norwich, Colney and Sprowston.

It has become a big source of discussion on community Facebook groups. Sandra Hurrell wrote on the Dereham noticeboard: “Been smelling it for 3 days,” and Su Williams commented: “I’m in Mattishall so whatever it is, it’s strong and far spread.”

A number of people have suggested the source is a British Sugar plant in Wissington which began growing an active ingredient in a newly developed epilepsy drug at the beginning of the year, while others have said it may be related to farming.
