A national charity is helping young people to spot the signs of peer-on-peer abuse following thousands of counselling sessions.

As part of Childline’s Speak Out Stay Safe service, the charity held 3,878 sessions about the issue in 2017-18 - a 29pc increase on the previous year.

And in Norfolk, NSPCC volunteers spoke to 17,642 children at 96 local schools during the same time.

The statistic from the NSPCC-run service are being release as part of its #ListenToYourSelfie campaign to help teenagers recognise if they are in an unhealthy relationship.

The charity is also working with the International Centre for Child Protection, at the University of Kent, to promote the online tool Looking Out for Lottie.

Any child worried about peer sexual abuse can call Childline on 0800 11 11. Adults concerned about a child, or wanting more information, can call the NSPCC Helpline on 0808 800 5000.
