Fakenham hosted Norwich Medics in their final EC1 North league game on Saturday.

Having played 13 and won 13 with bonus points, Fakenham were on a mission to win this league game to make it a clean sweep before starting the second phase of the promotion play-offs.

This was a challenging game in difficult weather and pitch conditions but Fakenham finally pushed through to get the result they were lookign for.

It was to be one of those games with sides camped in the opposition’s half for long periods. Medics keep Fakenham honest throughout the game, forcing them to defend, often for long periods, whilst they tried for their own win.

Fakenham scored two first half tries with one converted by Lloyd Marshall, the first from Murray Tindal and the second an interception by Josh Gee which resulted in an excellent solo try.

The second half saw Medics score an unconverted try of their own after a sharp passing movement put their centre clean through the Fakenham defence.

The conversion was wide of the mark, yet another casualty of the wind and rain.

To seal the game, Fakenham scored two more tries in the second half. James Howell scored his from the second interception of the match and Rory Singleton added the bonus point try, converted by the Norfolk Brewhouse man-of-the-match Marshall.

In the earlier game, Fakenham seconds lost 17-19 to local rivals Holt III in their EC3 North League match in what were controversial circumstances. Fakenham’s try scores were Richard Warren, Neil Ryder and Jake Huggett while one conversion was added.

Adam Steele, the seconds’ skipper, was happy with the performance and commitment of the squad and thanked all the players who took part in the match.

On Saturday Fakenham first team start their play-off rounds with a home game against Hadleigh from EC1 South Division.

Fakenham’s main challenge for the title is likely to come from South champions Ipswich YM, who won 13 of their 14 games. West champions Thurston boast a less impressive record, having lost three games.

The second team travel to Dereham for in EC3 North. Both games will kick-off at 2pm and supporters are welcome.
