Fakenham Town boss hopes his side will benefit from break

PUBLISHED: 08:40 15 February 2018

Fakenham Town manager Andy Cunningham says his side will benefit from a weekend off when they travel to Godmanchester Rovers in the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division on Saturday (3pm).

The Ghosts were scheduled to host Rovers last weekend but the clash was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch at Clipbush Park.

Cunningham hopes the break will have worked out well for his side as they continue their bid to avoid relegation to the First Division.

“You always want to get games on but the postponement probably came at a good time for us,” he said. “The fixture list has been fairly intense since the New Year, so the week off has given us a chance to freshen a few people up and to let a few niggles and knocks settle.

“We have struggled with injuries and fitness at times since I have come in but I am hoping there will be a real freshness and a real buzz about us now and everyone will feel ready to go against Godmanchester.”

The Ghosts go into the game sitting 22nd in the Premier Division and Cunnigham admits it will be a tough test for his side against sixth-placed Rovers.

“It is going to be a really tough afternoon, they are up the top of the division for a reason; we know that.

“We will have to be on it from minute one to get something out of the game, we can’t afford to make mistakes and them anything. We really improved in the second half against Gorelston and we will be looking to recreate that this weekend. The games against the top sides are really a free hit for us, so the pressure is off a little bit.”

Fakenham Reserves were also left idle by the weather at the weekend, with their scheduled trip to Gayton being postponed.

They are due to be in action at Clipbush Park on Saturday (2.30pm), with Thetford Rovers providing the opposition.
