Fakenham Town have issued a strongly worded statement criticising the Norfolk FA after being ordered to replay their Senior Cup quarter-final against Diss Town.

The Ghosts thought they had booked their place in the last four after claiming a 1-0 away win last Saturday, but that result has been declared null and void after it emerged that two of the players they used in the game should have been serving bans.

Speaking on Radio Norfolk last night, the FA’s Matt Carpenter said the suspensions of the Fakenham pair should have started 14 days after they were dimissed in a game on January 28, ruling them out last weekend - although he acknowleded that some incorrect information on the FA’s website had clouded the issue.

As a result the county organisation decided to replay the game rather than throw Fakenham out of the competition, with the two teams now having to do battle again at Brewers Green Lane on Tuesday evening.

It’s a decision that has angered the Ghosts, who are adamant they followed the guidelines set out by the governing body.

“Fakenham Town would like to clarify their position in regard to the ‘player eligibility issues’ decision by the Norfolk FA to replay the tie,” read a club statement. “Team selection was based around all available resources regarding player eligibility and we as a club have adhered to those resoures to the letter. All documents available prior to the game stated that the suspensions would start on 13/2/2017, two days after the tie in question. Therefore we didn’t see any eligibility issues at the time - and can’t understand how the decision has been made to replay the tie.”

The winner’s of the replayed game will take on Harleston Town in the semi-finals on March 14, with King’s Lynn facing Norwich United the following evening. Both games will be held at the FDC in Bowthorpe.

Meanwhile Wisbech Town will be aiming to leapfrog neighbours Holbeach in the UCL Premier Division table today after ending their run of poor home form with a 4-1 win over Leicester Nirvana. The Fenmen travel to mid-table Rothwell Corinthians knowing a win will see them overtake the seventh-placed side if their rivals lose to Kirby Muxloe.
