Fakenham Town took a big step towards league safety at the weekend with a 5-2 home win against Saffron Walden Town.

Not for the first time this season, the Ghosts got off to the worst possible start when, after just three minutes, they allowed the Saffron Walden striker a free header to break the deadlock.

Just four minutes later though, it was level-pegging once again when good work from Shane Akers down the right allowed Joel Glover time and space to fire goalwards and beat the keeper at his near post.

The visitors came back at Fakenham and shortly after Tommy Rix had denied them with a fine save, Saffron Walden took the lead again when an attempted headed clearance only found the feet of the striker, who lobbed it over Rix into the net.

The Ghosts tried once again to find an equaliser, with Danny Williams trying his luck from distance.

As stoppage time ticked by, Fakenham’s Ashley Jarvis finally levelled things with a fine shot past the Walden keeper from the corner of the box.

Unimpressed boss Wayne Anderson had his say at half-time, as he did in last week’s defeat at home to Swaffham, and the Ghosts came out for the second half firing on all cylinders.

After 57 minutes the Ghosts took the lead for the first time as Josh Youngs scored his 10th goal of the season from close range.

Although more chances followed for the home side they had to wait until the 72nd minute before a fourth was scored. Glover linked well down the left hand side with Tim Cary, who squared the ball to Akers racing into the box to fire home.

The Ghosts wrapped up the win in style in the 88th minute with a second from Jarvis – his 23rd of the season.

Before the game Anderson had set his sights on at least two wins to give his side the points required to ensure Premier Division status for next season sooner rather than later before the Norfolk Senior Cup Final at Carrow Road.

The win took the Ghosts up to 15th in the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division table, with just five games remaining.
