Foulsham 2, Aylsham 2

Foulsham hosted runaway leaders Aylsham in an Anglian Combination Division Two match on Saturday and were desperately unlucky not to grab all three points in a match they dominated for long periods.

The hosts were almost at full strength with the return of keeper Tom Harvey from police duty and striker Ben Darby from a calf injury, but made a number of tactical changes. Full-back Aaron Dougal and wide player Craig Hagon swapped places and midfielder Mark Gaskin replaced the injured Simon Prior as Ben Darby’s strike partner.

Aylsham, firm favourites to return to senior football after a five-year gap, took the lead after 25 minutes when a high ball wasn’t punched away far enough by Foulsham keeper Harvey and as it was returned into the area it was missed by three defenders before bobbling into the net.

Darby nearly equalised with a powerful header from a free-kick but the ball just went over the crossbar. It remained 1-0 at half time despite almost constant Foulsham pressure.

The breakthrough for the home side came 10 minutes into the second half when two Foulsham goals in two minutes saw the balance swing Foulsham’s way. Darby claimed the first goal when a shot was fumbled by the Aylsham keeper and it wriggled under his body and into the net.

Dougal got the second when Darby chased a ball to wide right on the goal line and crossed for a simple header to Dougal.

For the remainder of the game, Foulsham dominated possession with Aylsham becoming more and more ragged in their play, with two players booked for disputing decisions.

With time running out, Foulsham captain James Woodhouse was forced into two superb goal line clearances. Just when a Foulsham win looked assured, Aylsham equalised two minutes into injury time when striker Mark Critten pounced on a poor clearance to leave Harvey no chance.
