Fakenham Town appear to be a club in turmoil after Tuesday’s home match with Great Yarmouth was called off at short notice, with the players apparently refusing to fulfil the fixture.

The Bloaters turned up in good time at Clipbush Park but after going through their usual warm-ups they were told the game would not take place.

That left the visitors understandably furious, with joint manager Adam Mason tweeting: “17 players, physio, coaching staff, committee members and 26 supporters let down ... very poor, in fact a disgrace!”

Fakenham look certain to be punished for the call-off, with expulsion from the league the ultimate sanction but a fine being the more likely outcome.

Of more immediate concern to everyone connected with the club is the next fixture - a home clash with Anglian Combination outfit Yelverton in the Norfolk Senior Cup on Saturday (1.30pm), and whether it will be fulfilled. There is also a trip to Ely in the league coming up next Tuesday.

Bottom of the table with just four points from 11 fixtures, Fakenham recently parted company with manager Robbie Harris - while chairman Andrew Jarvis also stood down.

Neil Jarvis, caretaker manager for the Ghosts’ previous two games, was not involved on Tuesday and revealed behind-the-scenes issues had prompted his exit.

“What happened on Tuesday night was very sad,” he said. “After Robbie left I agreed to help out by taking temporary charge and we had a couple of games before the situation was discussed at a committee meeting. A name was put forward to take over and although some were for and some were against it was decided it would be in the best interests of the club for him to be appointed.

“A few days later I was told there had been another meeting and they no longer wanted to appoint him and would be advertising the post. A new chairman has come in as well. We had a chat on Sunday and I told him I no longer wished to be involved.”

Fakenham Reserves won 5-1 at Scole Reserves in the Norfolk Junior Cup. It’s Thetford Rovers away in Anglian Combination Division Two on Saturday.
