The organisers of a north Norfolk Parkrun aimed to 'show some love' by hosting a food bank collection to coincide with Valentine's Day.

Walkers, runners and volunteers at Holkham Parkrun took part in the event on February 11 with the aim of helping families and individuals in need.

The event - which was part of the national movement called Food Bank Run - saw participants bring non-perishable food or toiletry items for food banks covering Wells-next-the-Sea and Fakenham.

A spokesman for Wells Community Hospital Trust, which received a carload full of goods, said: “A huge thank you to all the runners and the wonderful Parkrun team at Holkham.

“Every donation will help make life a bit easier for a local household.”

As well as donations from individual runners and volunteers, another contributor was Fakenham-based Black Shuck Distillery.

Regular volunteer Mark Riseborough of Black Dog Computer Services asked his family to add to the collection instead of buying him birthday presents this year.

Lucy Harrison, event director for Holkham Parkrun, said: “We’ve been overwhelmed by the response from our fabulous participants, and this collection was such a great success.

"We will be doing something similar on the first Saturday of each month starting from April, asking people to just ‘bring one thing, a packet or tin’.

“Our hope is that these small individual acts of kindness can add up to a bigger contribution to our community and help us spread the Parkrun love all year round.”

People have come together regularly on Saturday mornings for the Holkham Parkrun since December 12,  2015.
