Now the splendour of Holkham is providing the backdrop to yet another film as up-and-coming German actress Q'orianka Kilcher swaps one princess role for another in a new multi-million pound movie currently being shot in north Norfolk.

The Barbarian Princess is partly set at Holkham and also on the paradise island of Hawaii.

It follows hot on the heels of Holkham Hall and estate featuring in The Duchess of Devonshire, starring Keira Knightley.

The new film tells the tale of Princess Ka'iulani, a Hawaiian princess who flees civil war to Victorian England in 1888 and falls in love with an Englishman before heading back to Honalulu to fight for the island's monarchy.

It bears similarities to Miss Kilcher's last role, as Heacham-born Virginia colonialist John Rolfe's bride, Pocahontas, in the film New World.

Her co-star is British actor Shaun Evans, of Being Julia and Cashback, in the Matador Pictures and Island Film Group production.

Other leading roles are being played by Barry Pepper (Flags of Our Fathers, The Green Mile, Saving Private Ryan) and Will Patton (A Mighty Heart, Armageddon).

And the production crew includes Steven Lawrence, who won an award for Excellence in Production Design for the Bond movie Casino Royale and Titanic.

Holkham Estate land agent Richard Gledson said movies filmed in north Norfolk helped attract people to the area.

“Filming has taken place both on the Holkham Estate and at other locations, so when the film is finished we believe it will encourage people to visit Norfolk and enjoy so much that is on offer in the county,” he said.

A release date for the film has yet to be announced.
