The devastation wreaked by the earthquake in Turkey and Syria has prompted a Fakenham nursing home to start raising money in support of the victims.

Woodspring House in Bringe Street is raffling off a hamper full of alcohol and potentially other prizes, and is planning a raft of other fundraisers.

Lisa Black, the home's manager, said: “We’re going to do a sponsored walk, one of our carers is dying his hair, and we’re having an open day.

“We’ve also got a swear box, and the staff are going to come to work in fancy dress or pyjamas.

“We want to make it a bit of fun, and we’re open to other ideas.”

Ms Black said the idea for the fundraiser came from one of the home’s residents, 94-year-old Betty Brown.

Ms Black said: “They’ve lost everything, and you can’t imagine something like that happening in England.

"I know the cost of living is high, but we’re not asking for much - raffle tickets are £2 each.”

Money raised will go to the DEC Turkey-Syria Earthquake Appeal through the British Red Cross.
