An eye-sore building has finally gone under wraps in hopes of making Fakeham's high street prettier.

The building at 9 Norwich Street, which has been described as a 'carbuncle' as it is covered in scaffolding since May last year, has now got a building wrap featuring historic town scenes provided by the Fakenham and District Community Archive.

There have been issues with the building since it closed in 2019.

Angela Glynn, mayor of Fakenham, said she was thrilled about the wrap.

She said: “Fakenham Town Council is delighted that the unsightly scaffolding in Norwich Street is now covered by a building wrap, commissioned by [North Norfolk] District Council (NNDC).

“Naturally, there is still disappointment locally because of the slow progress to repair this building.

"This is a listed building in one of the town's main shopping streets, and in a conservation area.

“Local councillors are concerned that the crack in the facade has widened further. However, NNDC has given assurance that their surveyors make regular checks for safety reasons.

“The facade is braced by diagonal poles within the building tied to secure internal structures. The town council will continue to work with NNDC to try to hasten the difficult and long and drawn-out legal negotiations with the owner.”

The district council served an urgent work notice on the building owner in 2021.
