A walker has expressed her sadness over the sight of litter dumped by an old railway footpath.

Bridget Moss, who lives near Fakenham, came across the old line off Greenway Lane in the town while waiting for her car to be serviced.

Wanting to kill some time, she walked down the slope and towards the path but was greeted by the sight of rubbish littering the bank.

The avid walker said she would never return to the spot, having turned away after taking photos of the area to report it.

“It was such a great discovery, but such a shame to see it in this state,” she said.

“Fakenham doesn’t have many of these amenities, and this has some real potential as a gorgeous walk, which makes the litter even more horrendous.

“It was not the coffee cups or plastic bottles you get on the lanes, it was more plastic, metal, I’m not too sure as I was too horrified, after taking the photos I left.

“The problem with litter is you need people not to want to drop it, it’s not worth getting the volunteers to clear it when you don’t stop it at the source. In the same way, you need people not to want to fly tip.

“I spent a week in the Cotswolds, and I didn't see any litter, sadly it’s not the same here."

The land belongs to Fakenham Town Council.

Angela Glynn, the town's mayor, went out and picked up some of the rubbish - she also contacted the council’s groundsmen who will give it special attention.

Mrs Glynn added: “We know of the problem and we're doing our best in keeping an eye on the area. We're looking to get additional help to get on top and stay on top of this issue."
