The buildings on the site of a former grammar school are now for sale.

Norfolk County Council has put the old school buildings on the former Fakenham Grammar School site on the market.

The council announced plans to sell the disused buildings in 2021.

The site has been empty since 2017 when the college merged with Fakenham Academy and relocated to Field Lane.

Part of the site remains in educational use - the Duke of Lancaster school was opened there in 2022.

County councillor Jane James, cabinet member for corporate services and innovation, said: “We have a good track record of finding new uses for our sites and the Duke of Lancaster School has already been a great addition to the town.

“We now have the opportunity to reuse more of the site, which should create new facilities for the town and generates proceeds to support council services.”

Part of the site had been offered to the town's cricket club.

The future of an air cadet unit, which is already based there, has been assured.

Tom FitzPatrick, councillor for Fakenham on the county council, added: “It's great that the future of the cadets is secure and I was pleased that efforts were made to see if another public body might be interested in other parts of the site before offering it for sale.

“The old building and its surroundings are prominent and important landmarks in Fakenham.

“The building started life as a house and was then adapted for educational use for many years, evolving over time to reflect the way secondary education delivery changed over the years. Now is the time for it to evolve and adapt once again.”
