A seafood factory which employs around 120 people is planned to close next month.

Staff at the Big Prawn Company, in Melton Constable, near Fakenham, were told by its owners, Cheshire-based Sykes Seafood, that it planned to close the site on October 27.

Sykes brought the Norfolk-based business in January after it had filed for administration.

Sykes has told the 120 staff - whose jobs they saved - that it was now planned to close the site, and the proposed last day of production would be in a month's time.

The employee said: “I am deeply saddened for all my work colleagues who will also lose their jobs.”

When called by this newspaper, a Big Prawn Company employee confirmed the closure plans and said the firm would reveal more sometime today (September 27).

We called Sykes on September 28, and they said more details are expected next week.

The Big Prawn Company supplies shellfish products to retailers, wholesalers and caterers.

Earlier this year restructuring specialist Kroll Advisory was appointed as its administrator.

It was reported that the Big Prawn Company had been struggling with unprecedented import and distribution cost increases following Brexit and the effects of the pandemic.

Sykes Seafood has been contacted for further comment.
