A sport that started in Mexico could be on the way to Fakenham.

Plans are being made to bring padel - a racquet sport played on an enclosed court a bit smaller than a tennis court - to Waterhouse Farm at East Barsham.

Langham Consulting has made the bid to North Norfolk District Council on behalf of an applicant to build two courts at the farm, at the edge of an existing farm yard.

The plans involve adding changing rooms, a small kitchen, servery/reception area and a flexible social space for seating and a pool table. There will also be an area to house a golf simulator.

The application says: "As family-run farm businesses come under increasing pressure going forward with the removal of government support, our budget forecasts highlight the desperate need to find alternative income streams.

"A diversification plan powered using its own energy source (in line with net zero) and a focus on multi-generational well-being, is an opportunity we feel is strongly aligned with our company ethos which is built on the premise of sustainability.

"We are enormously excited at the idea of bringing a new sport to the local area which appeals to all ages, athletic ability and means."

The plans have already received backing from local schools including Fakenham Academy and Alderman Peel High School, which could use the facilities.

The site will provide all the necessary equipment, with anyone wishing to take part only needing a pair of standard trainers required to take part.

A decision is expected in January.
