A 50-year-old man from Ipswich has been banned from the roads after he was caught using his mobile phone at the wheel.

Kirk Joseph, of Ann Street, appeared before Stratford Magistrates' Court in east London on March 26.

He was charged with using a handheld mobile phone at the wheel of a Vauxhall Corsa in Eastern Avenue, in the London borough of Barking and Dagenham, on June 12 last year.

The time of the offence was 1.35pm, according to a court listing.

Joseph admitted the offence, with the case heard through the single justice procedure.

Magistrates told the defendant he would be disqualified from holding a driving licence for a period of six months and have six points added to his licence.

Joseph's ban from driving was obligatory as he is a repeat offender, a court listing said.

As well as the disqualification, Joseph was ordered by magistrates to pay a fine of £40, a victim surcharge of £16 and costs of £110.

A collection order was made for the sums.
