Four million steps were taken by 281 people in 14 countries in a worldwide celebration of a woman who touched the lives of many.

Walk for Mandy started as a group of friends in Norfolk planning to walk 11 miles around the Holkham Estate in memory of Mandy Swift.

Mrs Swift, who lived in Wells, died aged 54 in September last year after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

The walk spiralled into a global phenomenon, with friends across the world organising fund-raisers in Mrs Swift’s memory.

There were 26 events across nine UK counties and in countries including Thailand, Brazil, the West Indies, Nepal, Magagascar, the Netherlands and France, including walks, runs, swims and skis.

Further events are planned in Germany, Rhode Island, USA and Australia.

A total £35,000 has been raised for research into pancreatic cancer.

Mrs Swifts’ friends, affectionately known as The Mandy Supporters Club, racked up a total 2,100 miles and took more than four million steps between them.

The Holkham walk was one of Mandy and her husband Robin’s favourite routes.

He said: “Mandy had an infectious joy for life and an endless capacity to help those around her. I’m not sure she understood just how many lives she touched, but the outpouring of kindness and support has been overwhelming.”

He added: “From the feedback and the photos, it’s clear that every event in every location was full of love and laughter.

“For Mandy, this was what life was about, filling it with people she loved, bringing people together and being there for them – as well as having as much fun as possible.

“The money we’ve raised will go to help others suffering from the same disease, which would have pleased her enormously.”

Nick Clare, a friend who helped Robin organise the Norfolk walk said: “If Mandy had organised this herself, this is exactly as she would have wanted it. We did her proud.”
