And Gozza's appearance at the Courtenay House at Tittleshall, made it a red letter day for resident Eric Smith who has been a Canary supporter for 50 years. Mr Smith, 84, was able to have a chat with the former Welsh international who is now a community ambassador for his old club.

Gozza is known for scoring goals spectacularly but not often, most notably in Norwich City's away win over Bayern Munich in the UEFA Cup.

He also has the distinction of scoring the last goal in front of the terraced (before seating was installed) Kop at Liverpool's Anfield ground.

The home, which now has 34 residents and has eight vacancies, is managed by Sue Martin, who was previously the district nurse covering the area.

The extensive refurbishment of the home has created new lounges, a hairdressing and beauty saloon, seen the installation of specialist baths and wet rooms and a landscaped courtyard is to include a sensory garden. The home has been completely re-decorated and new carpets laid and curtains hung.

Mrs Martin said that there is now a person appointed to be the home's activities co-ordinator, arranging a varied programme of events both at the home and outside visits.

The re-opening was also marked by some entertainment from pupils of Great Dunham Primary School. The children sang a selection of songs to the residents.

Mrs Martin said that anyone interested in finding out more about the home can contact her on 013428 700646.
