A safe containing a “substantial” amount of cash was stolen from a Fakenham pub after thieves broke in on Monday morning.

Police are appealing for information about the burglary at The Bull on Bridge Street, which happened between 2.50am and 4am.

The intruders smashed their way in through an upstairs window before escaping with the safe and a quantity of cigarettes.

The safe was later found empty and discarded near the Knights Hill roundabout at King's Lynn.

Ian Harper, one of the pub's landlords, said: “They tried the downstairs window and couldn't get in, so they've gone up to the flat roof and forced the locks on the upstairs window. Then they smashed the handle and a lock on an internal door.

“It has been quite damaging and taken up a lot of my time.”

Police were last night reviewing CCTV images from the pub. A spokesman for Norfolk police said: “A safe containing a substantial sum of cash was stolen along with a quantity of cigarettes.

“We would like to hear from anyone who may have noticed any suspicious persons or vehicles in the area between the times stated or from anyone with information in relation to the suspects.”

Anyone with information should contact PC Suzanne Pulfer at Fakenham Police Station on 0845 456 4567 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
