Youngsters nearly outshone their adult peers in the standard of entries for the children's part of the annual scarecrow festival in Wighton, near Wells.

More than 70 scarecrows were dotted around the north Norfolk village over the weekend and today.

And the children's scarecrow making competition was held yesterday.

Susan Polson, who organised the event with husband Graham, said: “There were 30 posts put out and only two not filled, although they were eventually filled by other families that came along after the event.

“It really was a day for family and friends, and a very successful event despite the weather.”

The annual event is a mix of the magnificent and the macabre.

The scarecrows will stay up until next weekend, when the village hosts a vintage tractor day with about 60 vehicles.

Mrs Polson believed this was the 20th year they had been holding the festival in its modern incarnation.
