Staff and students are today celebrating the best A-level results for several years, with twice as many able to go in to university.

Principal Matthew Parr-Burman said 71pc of results at the college were graded A-C.

“It’s the best result for a number of years, certainly the best result for the last few years,” he said.

“We’ve had lots of fantastic individual results, we’ve got students off to Oxford and Cambridge for the seventh year, it’s pretty impressive.

“We don’t select students on ability. We’re serving the community, any student who wants to come here, we’ll take them. The number of students who could go to university has doubled, we’re certainly punching above our weight and I’m really proud of the students.”

Zac Green, 19, punched the air as he opened his envelope, shouting: “Y-e-e-e-es...! I’ve got an A in drama. Thank goodness, it was hard work.”

He also achieved an A* in english literature, picking up 100pc despite having flu on the day of the exam, and an A in media studies.

Ellis Campbell, 19, said: “My results weren’t amazing but I’ve got into university, so I don’t care.”

She added she would be going to Cardiff, to study early years education.

Stacey Curry, 19, achieved Cs in english literature, film studies and her extended project, along with a D in photography. Her results have got her a place at York University, the study creative writing.

Luke Vertigan, 19, has a job as an apprentice environmental protection officer, after achieving a B in geography and a D in environmental science.

“It’s been pretty good here,” he said of the college. “There’s a relaxed atmosphere and the teachers are good.”
