Police were called to a altercation at Fakenham Racecourse towards the end of Jarrold Ladies' Day, in the evening of Sunday, June 2.

And chief executive David Hunter has said the racecourse is taking the incident "very seriously" and vowed to "get to the bottom" of what went on.

Mr Hunter, who is also clerk of the course, described the incident as "unfortunate" and added: "I didn't see what happened.

"Police were there and as and when we know more details we'll be taking action to ensure we don't have anything like that ever happen again."

Mr Hunter said the incident involved two or three people, and occurred after the day's races had concluded.

"It involved a couple of chaps and it wasn't anything of any consequence but it wasn't something we would expect to happen here," he said.

"When I hear more details about it we will be taking it very seriously and these people involved will be dealt with - within the confines of what we can do.

"We will get to the bottom of it.

"I'm absolutely fuming and will not tolerate anything like that.

"I will find out certain people involved and there will be action."

"I can't emphasise that enough."

But he added: "It was a very small, isolated incident at the very end of the day.

"We had thousands and thousands of people there and there were only about 30 or 40 people left [at the time].

"It did not ruin what was a fantastic day for everybody."

A Norfolk Police spokesperson confirmed police attended an incident at the racecourse on Sunday, and said: "Police were called to an altercation at Fakenham Racecourse in Pudding Norton on Sunday evening at around 7.45pm."

They added: "We spoke to all the parties concerned, there were no reports of any injuries and words of advice were given."

The annual Ladies' Day event, which is a highlight of Norfolk's social and racing calendar, saw prizes given for the best-dressed lady, the best hat, and the best-dressed couple by partner Jarrold.

And Fakenham Racecourse spokeswoman Dalia Courridge said: "There have been more young people attending and people are putting greater effort into their dresses."
