Jonathan Court, 32, of Hayes Lane, clocked up more than 30 hours over two days when he went to the aid of others during the devastation of the Beast from the East.

When the former Army Reserve soldier woke up on Wednesday, February 28, rather than take a snow day off from work, he fired up his Land Rover, defrosted ice from its windows, and began offering help via social media.

The next two days were spent rescuing stranded drivers, dropping off care packages of food and drink, taking people to GP appointments, delivering prescriptions, and even driving a doctor to Norwich for a shift.

Owner of Norfolk Tree Services Ltd, Mr Court said his experiences in the Army and the emergency services, had prepared him for these types of events. His Land Rover is also fully equipped to deal with emergencies.

“Every time something like this happens, if I can’t get to work then I go out to help to see what I can do,” he said.

“It’s nice to give something back.”

Mr Court also teamed up with five other local men during the cold spell .

Thomas Ware, Tombo Sutton, Andrew Dix and Richard Easter, and Mr Court were all presented with gift hampers by Morrisons in Fakenham.

However, by the end of the week things turned sour for Mr Court when he discovered vandals had damaged his truck.

When he arrived home on Sunday, March 4, he said he saw “silver, shiny plastic” from where someone had “rippled off the air vent cowling”.

“Pulling the trucks in the snow has knackered my truck’s engine and is going to cost me around £1,000 to repair,” he said. “I also spent around £100 in fuel.

“I don’t mind because I wanted to help but then coming back home to see my truck had been damaged - it’s very upsetting and the mind boggles.”

Mr Court estimated the replacement part would cost around £25 but said he was “livid” it had happened.
