The century-old lifeboat station watching over Wells harbour could be replaced if one of the next generation of rescue vessels is allocated to the town.
The RNLI is designing a prototype for a faster, more manoeuvrable all-weather lifeboat which is set to be ready for offshore trials in 2011.
If the tests are successful, managers and crew members at Wells hope to be given one of the new vessels to improve their response times in reaching casualties.
