Jobs are set to go at promotional gifts company Listawood where the company has embarked on a 400,000 investment and modernisation programme.

But the automation, which the firm claims will give it the most technologically advanced printing and finishing equipment of any of its competitors in the industry, means that jobs will be lost from its 200-strong workforce based at the firm's plant on the Tattersett Business Park at Sculthorpe.

Currently a period of consultation is in progress so that numbers of job losses are not yet known but managing director, Alex Turner, says that the details of the numbers of jobs to go will be known in a few weeks time.

“The consultation with staff over jobs is still on-going so we won't know the exact numbers involved for several weeks,” said Mr Turner.

The company has enjoyed quite a high profile and has won a number of prestige awards and has been visited by the Duke of York. About three years ago the company, which makes promotional merchandise including fridge magnets and computer mouse mats, was taken over in a management buy-out.

The installation of the new HP Indigo press together with coating and finishing equipment designed and manufactured in the UK, is part of a broader investment programme in its manufacturing equipment.

“This is need to build upon Listawood's position as a leading manufacturer of low cost, short run promotional material to business gift companies in the UK and Northern Europe. We need to take the business forward into the 21st century,” said Mr Turner.

The company is known as one of Europe's largest and most highly regarded manufacturers of promotional business gifts. In the past six months the firm has won an unprecedented number of industry awards
