A FAKENHAM supermarket was forced to close its doors for several hours after a teenager with a blood-covered face ran through the aisles.

Several marked police cars, two vans and an ambulance were called to Tesco in Oak Street, Fakenham, to deal with the incident, which was seen by many shoppers, including screaming children.

It appears the young man had been injured during a disturbance outside the store.

He ran into Tesco and was pursued by a member of staff up and down the aisles with blood flowing from his face, leaving a trail in his wake.

The incident, which happened at teatime on Monday, was a major talking point around Fakenham. The store was open for business but the clean-up was still going on.

Eyewitness John Townsend criticised the way the situation was handled by Tesco as the store was not immediately closed.

“I am really angry about this because even some staff were saying the shop should be closed and everyone should get out. Children were screaming because they were so frightened. In the worse scenario they could have been dealing with someone armed with a knife or a gun. It was mayhem.”

A Tesco spokesman said: “We can confirm that there was in an incident in the store. Our staff acted appropriately and the store was closed for a few hours as a result. The matter has now been referred to the police.”

He would not comment further.

Police confirmed they were investigating the incident and a 16-year-old youth was arrested on suspicion of causing affray. He was kept in custody overnight and was being questioned on Tuesday, but was released on police bail pending further inquiries. Investigations into the matter are continuing, police said.
