This week is all about celebrating the British pie as National Pie Week takes place from March 6-12.

But what better way to mark the occasion than revealing the UK’s favourite pies and what classic flavours are we really into? - Maybe it’s all about a meat and potato pie or just a juicy chicken and gravy one.

Tesco has revealed the UK’s favourite traditional pies, with research conducted by Opinium Research which surveyed 2,000 people.

How can you make the perfect pie?

Tesco Executive Chef Jamie Robinson has revealed five tips when it comes to making the ‘perfect pie’:

Give it a rest - Before rolling out your pastry you must make sure you leave it to rest. This will stop it from shrinking back when you line your dish and will ensure your pie receives five out of five for its appearance.

Spice it up - For an added punch, why not jazz up your pastry with some additional herbs and spices? Jamie said he likes to add extra seasoning to the pastry as it improves the taste and brings additional flavours to the dish.

You can even add in some grated cheese to mix it up - this will make your pie even more delicious and add a softer texture.

Mind the gap - When adding the pie filling, always ensure you leave a little gap at the top (1-2cm), this gives the pie enough space if the pastry should shrink back, without splitting it and also ensures you get a super crispy topped pie.

An eggcellent finish - Always give your pastry an egg wash before you crimp the edges. Egg wash is a simple mixture of beaten egg and milk, which is brushed onto most pastries before baking, as it adds shine and colour and helps seal the edges.

This helps your pie contain the ingredients. Jamie said he sometimes egg washes the pastry twice to get the perfect golden bake – once before crimping and once afterwards.

Never forget to add a hole - A common pie-making mistake is not cutting an air hole in the top of your pastry. This means that your filling will steam and either break the pastry in an unwanted place or make the pastry soggy.

Adding that small hole in the centre of your lid will allow the hot air to escape and the pie to cook perfectly.
