A charity has set up a new handyman service for the over-65s in north Norfolk.

The Benjamin Foundation launched the new service, Ben's Workforce, this week.

It aims to help older people with household repairs, so they can remain independent and live in their own home for longer.

The tasks will be carried out by a team of trained, competent and Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly CRB) approved handypersons.

Workforce manager Jamie Brown said: 'Many basic household jobs can be really challenging for people if they are for any reason not in the best of health, are physically too frail or are simply not confident in carrying them out.

'Everyone in Ben's Workforce has lots of home improvements experience and has had their skills assessed.'

The project was possible through funding from Norfolk County Council which had helped to set the service up; with premises, a van and staff costs.

There was also local support with Blyth and Wright in Sheringham, B&Q in Fakenham, and CT Bakers all donating tools and materials to the scheme.

In order for the service to be sustainable, each job carries a minimum charge of £20 with each job being priced individually and the charge goes towards the ongoing running costs of the service.

The Benjamin Foundation was established in 1994 with just one rural youth club in North Norfolk. Today, the charity delivers over 30 services and helps over 2,000 children, young people and families across Norfolk every year.
