Campaigners are stepping up their fight against a controversial plan to build 38 homes on land which they want to turn into a village green.

Melton Constable Country Club has applied to North Norfolk District Council to redevelop land off Grove Road in Melton Constable.

There would be 15 affordable homes and the overall number has been cut from an original proposal for 40 properties.

A total of 43 letters of objection have been sent to the council, along with a petition signed by more

than 150 people from the village and surrounding

area.

Opponents fear it will create traffic, parking and drainage problems and lead to the

loss of land used for informal recreation and a village green campaigners group has applied for village green status.

Nine letters of support for the homes from local people and 124 from country club members have been submitted to North Norfolk highlighting the need for affordable housing, pointing out there are already play areas in Melton Constable and stressing it would secure the future of the country club.

Members of North

Norfolk's development control committee (west)

will discuss the scheme

today. Planning officers are asking members to give delegated authority to approve it as long as flood risk and ecological issues are resolved.

There will also need to be agreement on payments for local services such as schools, library and fire service and ensuring affordable housing is provided.
