Rumours that a quayside amusement arcade in Wells, severely damaged by fire three years ago, is for sale have been denied.

The word going around the town was that the arcade, which fronts the quayside but has stood boarded up and an eyesore since the fire in January 2005, was that it was now on the market and a buyer was being sought.

But this week Kay Gelder, a member of the family that owns the property, said she is aware of the rumour circulating in the town but stresses that it is only a rumour and that it is not up for sale.

The fire caused extensive damage to the arcade and adjoining premises called The Yellow Shop. Fire crews were praised for getting the blaze under control and preventing it spreading to adjoining properties.

In the three years it has been boarded up there have been a number of rumours about its future. One of these was that the property was to be re-developed and a boutique-style hotel created on the site.
