Lives could be saved in Fakenham with the expansion of 20 mph speed limits through the town centre.

A new series of 20mph limits in Fakenham town centre is the subject of public consultation and the man who has been calling for the reduced speed limits believes they could save lives.

Norfolk county councillor David Callaby has been campaigning for the limits to be introduced into more sections of roads.

The new speed limits are proposed for Oak Street, through the town centre, along part of Olivet Way, and along White Horse Street. The new reduced limited is also proposed for Norwich Road to beyond the town's Infants' school and along Queen's Road to a point beyond the junior school.

Mr Callaby said he has bee asking for this extension of 20 mph limits since he became a Norfolk county councillor in 2005.

“I feel that the implementation of these additional 20 mph limits will make the town safer for everyone. The town centre is becoming busier and we have got to do something to bring the speeds of vehicles down before someone is seriously injured or killed,” said Mr Callaby.

His view has also been shared by Fakenham Town Council which is regularly discussing the need for lower speed limits at its monthly meetings.

Mr Callaby said that the new proposed limits may take several months to become legally binding as they have to be approved by the Department of Transport.

“At the end of the day this is about saving people's lives,” he said.
