A CYCLIST who died after being in collision with a car was thrown into the air by the impact, an inquest was told.

Mechthild Turner, 57, known as Mecky, of Gong Lane, Burnham Overy Staithe, was pronounced dead on September 29 last year, the day after her bicycle and an overtaking car were in collision as she turned right at a junction.

The inquest was told that the driver of the car, Louise Aston, had been on her way to see friends at Hunstanton when the accident happened at a crossroads of the B1155 road at Burnham Overy.

Mrs Aston, who was visibly distressed, said the cyclist had not indicated her intention to turn right, and she thought Mrs Turner must have turned into the path of her car, a view supported by the evidence collected by police who went to the scene.

Investigating officer PC Wendy Biddle said: “I am of the opinion that the pedal cycle must have moved into the car's path whilst being overtaken. The cyclist was not wearing a cycle helmet, and the driver claims the cyclist did not indicate her intention to turn right at the cross- roads.

“The back wheel had been hit by the car while the bike was at an angle. If it had been hit from behind, the back would not have gone in the trajectory it landed in.”

A witness who was driving her car towards the scene said: “I saw something that looked like a pile of clothes in the air, but it wasn't clear what it was. I carried on down the road and I realised what it was in the air. I watched it fall on to the road surface and recognised it to be a person.”

Gemma Ebsworth, from London, also saw the aftermath of the crash. She was with her husband and was cycling some distance in front of Mrs Turner, whom she did not know.

She said: “When I heard the collision I thought it was two cars colliding. I turned round very soon afterwards and saw the car pulling up on the hard shoulder and saw the lady rolling down the bank.”

Her husband Jonathan called the emergency services.

Mrs Turner was pronounced dead next day at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge.

Coroner William Armstrong said: “Mecky Turner died as a result of a road traffic collision. I want to offer my condolences for the tragic loss of a much-loved wife and mother.”
