Carnival celebrations got underway in Wells at the weekend with entertainment ranging from a wild west themed night to a raft race.

Tens of thousands of locals, day trippers and holidaymakers will attend dozens of events during the eight day carnival programme.

Tracy Willacy, 17, was crowned carnival queen yesterday during the fete day on the Beach Road recreation field.

A craft fair, beer festival on the Albatros, bell ringing, a songs of praise and live music by the Glamtastics were among the other highlights of the opening weekend.

On Monday there is a diverse series of events including a carnival's got talent show, pirate night and a Rig A Jig Jig exhibition and live music.

Tuesday sees the Funquay day on the Quay - which is a mix of music and stalls.

The main carnival day and parade is on Saturday.

Chairman Patrick Weston said: “We can't guarantee sunshine but we can guarantee a great atmosphere in the town and hope not just to match last year's amazing week but beat it and give Wells a carnival to be proud of.”
