A student nurse from Wicken Green, in deepest Norfolk, hopes to be crowned Miss Cambridgeshire.

Natasha Adams, 20, was scouted whilst she was walking through Cambridge with her boyfriend Luke Elliott.

She is up against 30 other young hopefuls in the contest, which is being judged at Anstey Hall in Cambridgeshire on February 15.

“I’d just come out of McDonald’s in Cambridge with my boyfriend,” she said. “We were walking into the Grand Arcade and at the top of the ramp there were two women with clipboards.

“When we got to the top, they asked if they could have a word and said: ‘We think you’d be perfect for our Miss Cambridgeshire contest.

“Luke laughed. I just thought oh my God, I’ve never done anything like this before.”

Former Fakenham High and Fakenham Sixth Form pupil Natasha, who is in the final year of a three-year adult nursing course at Anglia Ruskin University, decided to give it a go.

Last year’s winner Carina Tyrell, who went on to win Miss England, was also a medical student. She went on to come fourth in Miss World.

But Natasha said even if she wins the Cambridgeshire title, and gets entered for the national title, it will be unlikely to change her career plans.

“It’s just an experience, I don’t know where it’s going to take me,” she said. “I had a poorly grandad at the age of 10. The nurses in the N&N were absolutely fantastic, they were my inspiration.”

She also hopes to get a job at the N&N or Queen Elizabeth Hospital, rather than Addenbrooke’s, where she is currently undertaking a work placement.

Luke’s employers, Bruce Towers and Sons Heating and Plumbing Engineers, are sponsoring her entry in the competition.

“I struggle walk in high heels to be honest,” she said. “I do 12 hour shifts in ugly nurse’s shoes.”

Natasha is staging a special bingo and raffle night at the Green Park Centre, in Wicken Green, on Friday night (7pm).

Proceeds will go to the charity Beauty with a Purpose, which supports underprivileged children worldwide.
